Gold Driver Recognition

The Marathon Classic Presented by Owens Corning & O-I is very fortunate to work closely with a number of creative agencies and partners to produce material and information that promotes this popular LPGA event and the variety of activities that are part of tournament week.

Several of our partners and their creative efforts were displayed at the annual LPGA Tournament Owners’ Association (TOA) meeting held in late 2014 and the Marathon Classic received great recognition in a number of categories winning Gold Driver awards for various creative designs and messages.   Most all of the 33 LPGA events held both in the United States and throughout the world submitted creative presentations that were evaluated by a panel of judges. 

Communica of Toledo is the Marathon Classic’s primary marketing partner designing and producing most all of the tournament’s printed materials and media print advertising.  Communica’s design and production team members were responsible for the newspaper and magazine ad designs that won the top prize of Gold for the Newspaper/Magazine Advertisements category for the 2014 TOA Gold Driver Awards.  The judges’ comments for the award winning designs included; "Marathon Classic had a good theme – 'don’t miss your moment.' They let you know what to expect and had actionable bullets like where you can get your 2 for 1 tickets, military discounts and kids get in free programs." Hart of Maumee designs and produces the television ad spots for the Marathon Classic. The ad created for the promotion of the 2014 tournament featured LPGA star Lexi Thompson and was creatively tied to the overall theme of the tournament, “Don’t Miss your Moment”.  The ad, which showed Lexi’s close interaction with the 14th hole spectators following her hole-in-one in the 2013 Marathon Classic, was awarded a Silver for the second best ad in the TV Spot category. Wyse Advertising from Cleveland is Marathon Petroleum’s ad agency and the Marathon Classic has benefited from working with Wyse on several aspects of the promotion of the tournament.  For the 2014 TOA Gold Driver Awards, Wyse’s team produced all of the presentation boards that were submitted for the judges’ review and evaluation.  The boards were very professional and certainly helped demonstrate the positive aspects of the Marathon Classic.  One specific category Sponsorship Activation received a Silver for the display that outlined the various elements of three separate sponsors, Marathon Petroleum including the Marathon Employee Day, the NW Ohio Chevy Dealers and LaBatt including the LaBatt Blue Royale Party Deck. One of the judges’ comments regarding this category was, "Marathon’s gas station themed structures made for excellent title sponsor integration." View the Sponsorship Activation display here.   

The 2014 Gold Driver Awards Radio Spot category’s top two winners were both from the Marathon Classic.  The two best radio ads were produced by Wyse Advertising with Gold for the Stacy Lewis 30-second spot and Silver awarded to the Richard Petty 30-second spot. The judges’ comments on the radio spots included: "The Marathon Classic had two unique but equally strong commercials.  The distinctive voice of Richard Petty, his connection to Marathon, and his celebrity status certainly caught the attention of the listener.  The Stacy Lewis commercial featured one of the LPGA’s top players, was very clear and included all of the information appropriate for a radio spot."
