Lexi Thompson Commits to Play in 2014 Marathon Classic
April 15, 2014
Lexi Thompson, winner of the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, has officially committed to play in this year’s Marathon Classic July 17-20 at Highland Meadows Golf Club. With her win at the Kraft Nabisco Championship Thompson, who is only 19 years old, became the second youngest major champion in the history of the LPGA.
“To receive Lexi Thompson’s official commitment is great news for the tournament,” stated tournament director Judd Silverman. “Winning her first major championship at the age of 19 is truly an incredible accomplishment. She wowed the crowds at last year’s Marathon Classic with her tremendous length off the tee and dramatic hole-in-one during Sunday’s final round. We couldn’t be happier for the golf fans of northwest Ohio and southeastern Michigan knowing that Lexi will be returning to the Marathon Classic again this summer.”
With 3 top 10 finishes already this season, Thompson is currently ranked 3rd on the 2014 money list with earnings of $491,885. In her young career, Thompson has already won 4 tournaments and earned over $2 million in addition to competing on the 2013 U.S. Solheim Cup team.
Thompson is used to early success. At age 12, she was the youngest ever participant in the U.S. Women’s Open. Last year Thompson finished in 3rd in the Marathon Classic.
