The Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning & O-I announced today that Mariah Stackhouse, a member of the winning 2014 U.S. Curtis Cup team, and Caroline Powers, a 2013 graduate of Michigan State University have been selected to receive sponsor’s exemptions into this year’s tournament scheduled for July 17-20 at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio.
Stackhouse, 20, was a key player on the U.S. Curtis Cup team two weeks ago in St. Louis winning a total of 3 points to lead the Americans to a lopsided victory over Great Britain/Ireland. Stackhouse also became the first African-American to play in the Curtis Cup matches since the inception of the event in 1932. Stackhouse drew rave reviews for not only her play but also for her leadership abilities by giving an impassioned speech to inspire her team to a 3-0 start after the first day. Stackhouse, a junior at Stanford University, has won four tournaments in her first two collegiate seasons including the 2012 Peg Barnard Invitational where she shot an NCAA record 61 in the final round.
Powers, 23, from Bowling Green, Ohio was an All-American at Michigan State University before turning pro last summer. Powers earned her Symetra Tour card in 2013. In 2014 she has two top ten finishes putting her in the top 25 of the Symetra Tour money list. The top ten players on the Symetra Tour automatically earn LPGA Tour status for the following year. Powers recently qualified for this week’s U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
“We are delighted to have Mariah and Caroline in this year’s Marathon Classic field,” stated Tournament Director Judd Silverman. “Caroline is working hard to earn full time status on the LPGA Tour and this experience will be benefit her in many ways. Mariah is one of the best women amateurs in the country with impeccable credentials both on and off the course. She has all the ability to be a great LPGA professional someday. I think people are really going to enjoy watching these talented young ladies as they compete against the greatest women golfers in the world at Highland Meadows.”
This year’s Marathon Classic will include notable LPGA stars Stacy Lewis (#1 ranked player in the world) and 2014 LPGA winners Paula Creamer, Lexi Thompson and Michelle Wie.
